A home business or “home occupation” involves making products or providing services in your home (in part or in whole) but takes up less than 50% of the home.
Allowing for limited commercial activity in homes in all neighborhood, mixed-use, and center zoning districts
Ensuring that residential use is primary and commercial activity does not create nuisance levels of noise, traffic, safety hazards, etc.
Requiring a business license
Business activity relating to cannabis is regulated separately, in RZC 21.78.170
In 2026-2027, the City will evaluate home business regulations for consistency with the Redmond 2050 Comprehensive Plan. Redmond 2050 emphasizes complete neighborhoods: places where someone can meet all their basic needs by walking or rolling close to home. This project will evaluate ways to support home businesses as an opportunity to advance complete neighborhoods and entrepreneurship in Redmond. The City will:
Identify needs for supporting home businesses and small businesses in neighborhoods.
Address the impacts to neighbors as the City continues to transition from a suburb to a city.
